Steampunk Clothing

Steampunk clothing brings the literary steampunk fantasy into the world of fashion. Steampunk fashion is heavily influenced by the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, the imagined technologies of alternate universes like the Babbage Machine. This is a highly imaginative and creative fashion movement.

Steampunk clothing includes visions of the Victorian era, with its steam powered technologies but with a nice touch of rebellion, the punk aspect of the steampunk style. Is yours a steam powered heart?

What I love is the expression of rebellion against being just another cog in the machine and master of the machine instead. If imagination and the fantastic is rebellion then count me in! Hand me my aviator goggles, my show hat and a stunning goddess corset. Don't forget the kick ass shoes! Nothing like the right shoes to give us a sense of power.

I actually find a very steampunk clothing trend in quite a few movies these days. Most of the movies with Helena Bonham Carter seem to have a steampunk twist. I am thinking of her in Sweeny Todd and the latest Harry Potter movies. I have to admit that I am very taken with Helena Bonham Carter, I just love her fashion and evil characters.

A Steam Punk Fashion Heart

If you have a steampunk heart and want to reflect it in your wardrobe they you have to check out some of the steampunk clothing out there. Browsing all the stuff out there has been loads of fun. I wish I could buy most of what I see but window shopping is always fun at any rate.

I love dressing with imagination and this stuff has got me buzzing. It is actually quite difficult to write this as I keep wonder what else there is that I have missed. From Victorian jackets and skirts, to amazing corsets I just keep finding new stuff and I have yet to check out the Edwardian styles yet!

It may well be that I watched way to much TV as a kid growing up but I can see how easy it is for people to slip into a little fantasy role playing all dressed up. To take a step into a favorite book, imagining air ships and steam powered everything, it might seem strange but it does take imagination and a certain amount of intelligence.

Ok, so I guess I had better justify why I think that engaging in this sort of fashion fantasy shows a certain level of intelligence. Having read many books based on alternate realities, divergent realities and historical visions of the future, I can tell you that these types of books are not aimed toward those with low comprehension skills.  To understand the difference engine or to imagine how the machinery of H.G. Wells works takes a lot of imagination and the ability to actually take on board information. It is my strong opinion that the fans of steampunk clothing and fashion are in that act showing a real capacity for imagination and intelligence.

Steampunk Clothing Obsession

If you are suffering with a real steampunk clothing obsession there are a few things you might want to consider. To buy some of this stuff off the peg, in good quality, can be a little on the expensive side, or a lot on the expensive side! Not to say that that stuff is not really amazing and worth it, but its the sort of thing most people would have to save up for.

My solution to this is to get the cheaper costume stuff, and alter it, possibly doing a quick sewing job to an already existing item and altering it from normal to extravagant. There is also the ability to buy patterns and sew if you are up to using a sewing machine.

I do think the idea of modifying and altering the stuff you already have with fairly cheep items seems very much in the steampunk spirit. When you do your own alterations you are doing the creative thing that steampunk is all about. Strange modifications and unusual imaginings is exactly how a Victorian Punk would have had to do it! The very idea of buying 'off the peg' is actually a pretty new and modern way to shop. Custom items and altered items was the way to do things historically, and steampunk is the melding of history and visions of the future.

My point, be creative and have fun! I, personally, have to get over the idea that buying a cheep costume is cheep and not something I can wear often. There simply is no reason why I could not buy and use the costume kits to give new life to old clothing, and create something more comfortable for 'normal' wear.
