Why Wear Sports Sunglasses?

If you regularly undertake outdoors exercise such as running or cycling you may find yourself contemplating a pair of sunglasses. What are the persuasive reasons you might need in order to persuade your spouse that you can buy some new sunglasses? Here are 4 ideas to add to your arsenal:

Grit in your eyes – On a bicycle, you are particularly are risk from flies and grit in your eyes. This is totally preventable by wearing a pair of sunglasses. Runners might not be susceptible to grit but flies are non-discriminating and will fly into a runner's eye as happily as a cyclist.

Sun – Running is monotonous and painful enough without having to run for several miles squinting into the sun. Explain to your spouse that you are simply preventing wrinkles by purchasing sunglasses.

Wind – Picture the scenario. You have just run several miles into the sun and now you have to turn round and run home into the wind. Even worse, the wind is strong enough to whip the grit up into your eyes.

Anonymity – Now then, next scenario – you are aiming for a personal best and running your hardest. This is not the time you need people to be making eye contact and asking for directions. The easy solution again is a pair of sunglasses to avoid eye contact.

So you have persuaded yourself and your spouse that you need them but are asking yourself why not just normal sunglasses?

The chief reason you should find yourself a pair of sports sunglasses is the strength of the lens. Sports sunglasses often have a polycarbonate lens which is stronger than glass but lighter. Polycarbonate is the material used in aircraft windshields which is a good demonstration of its strength. The frame is also usually made of a tough but flexible material.

Sports sunglasses are also good for golfers. Sports sunglasses usually are styled without a bottom frame and this is particularly good as it doesn't interfere with the golf swing.

Does it matter what kind of camera I have for sports photography if I have a sports lens?

I'm thinking of buying this camera http://www.camera-camera.com/default.aspx?scope=ProductDetails&tabid=127&idProduct=905

Is this suitable for soccer photogarphy? It's only amateur and I can get very close to the game.

Neither of the lenses listed are "sports lenses". Shooting soccer you will need a lens that is at least 200 mm, 300 mm is better. This means a lens like the 55-200 mm or 70-300 mm lens.

Shooting from the sidelines you still need a long lens.

Since you have no experience using a fully adjustable camera, don't spend much on the camera right now. Spend as little as you can on the DSLR body and put the money from your camera budget into the lens or lenses.

The 18-55 mm lens that is sold with either Nikon or Canon cameras is the one you will be using when shooting about 80% of your other photography; family, friends, groups and portraits.

The fisheye lens you linked is the opposite of a "sport" lens. The only successful use of a fisheye lens in sports is when shooting very close to skateboarders and stunt bicyclists. In the case of the 15 mm fisheye, it is only a fisheye when used with a Canon 35 mm EOS, 5D or 1D camera. Canon makes no fisheye for there entry level cameras like the 1000D camera that use APS-C sensors. Only Nikon makes such a lens for there APS-C cameras like the D80 or D90 .. that is the 10.5 mm lens..

Here is a sample video shot with a Nikon D90 in which the 10.5 mm fisheye was used for some of the takes.

Here is a list of lenses that sports photographers use which could be called sport lenses, although the long ones are also used for wildlife, action and editorial photography.

Indoor and court sports: 24-70 mm f/2.8, 70-200 mm f/2.8, 200 mm f/2.0

Field sports, indoor and out: 200-400 mm f/2.8, 300 mm f/2.8, 400 mm f/2.8 and 600 mm f/4.0

As you can see these lenses are quite expensive, so are mostly used by the professionals making a living shooting sports venues
