Aviation Headset

Pilot wears headsets when they were flying to help them communicate with air traffic controllers and with passengers in the aircraft, and to protect their hearing from the noisy aircraft environment. Getting an excellent aviation headset is something that should be top priority to any pilot. A good aviation headset is going to offer protection as well as comfort and a strong performance. Comfort, function and hearing protection are areas of consideration for pilots when looking at available aviation headsets. Finding the best aviation headsets is something that a pilot needs to do so they can focus on flying. Most headsets include two ear speakers in a cupped cover. This is where communication is amplified for the pilot to hear.
One important thing in aviation headsets is the noise cancellation ability, since there is high noise level from wind, propeller, and exhaust. General headsets have a degree of passive noise canceling. This is derived from the design and materials used in the ear cup of the headset. Some headsets have greater degrees of passive noise canceling ability than others. Many headsets that have greater passive noise canceling abilities have larger ear cups and include much more padding in the ear seals. Most advanced aviation headsets have active noise cancellation abilities of 20-30 db. This works on the principle of electronic noise cancellation, which is possible by generating a signal that is identical to the sound pressure level, but inverted, so that they cancel out each other. These headsets offer greater noise reduction for hearing protection and require batteries or an alternate power source to power the electronic noise canceling function.
If the power source is interrupted or the batteries die, the noise canceling ability of the headset can be seriously degraded. The microphones and speakers of the aviation headset are another prime consideration. These should be of highest audio quality since they will be used to maintain contact with ground control and/or others in the air. It is important that both operate clearly so a pilot can both hear and be heard without having to ask for a repeat. Another main factor is comfort. This is not one that can be generalized, though. Each pilot will have their own preferences as to what feels comfortable and what does not. It is important for a pilot to get an aviation headset that is comfortable to wear for long periods of time and one that will be comfortable to use when flying. Besides the main factors a pilot may also want to consider other extras that some aviation headsets come with. Some brands feature carrying cases, and different control features, like volume control.
Also a pilot may want to consider the warranty period that comes with an aviation headset. Some aviation headsets also have audio interface options, which enable them to be connected to a CD or an MP3 player. Some are also cell phone compatible. It is not enough for a pilot to simply seek out the best known name brands. Aviation headsets are an important piece of equipment for the pilot and it should be chosen with care. The Internet is a good source for locating a headset. There are several web sites that provide comprehensive information about the wide range available today.
